Filipina In A Southern Kitchen

A Guide to This Food Blog
Be With Mia: A Guide to This Food Blog

Welcome! This practical guide will give you a quick overview of Be With Mia—what you’ll find here and how to get the most out of the blog.

After many delays, I’m excited to finally launch this blog. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m proud to share it with you.

There are four main sections: RECIPES, NOTEBOOK, START HERE, and MEET MIA.

RECIPES

Like you, I get frustrated by endless stories before the recipe. Here, I keep things brief—longer posts are reserved for useful cooking tips and techniques.

Each recipe includes a short background, a bit of history or culture, then gets straight to the steps.

Recipes are organized by course and cuisine (currently Filipino and Southern). Use the search bar or browse the index to find dishes or ingredients.

A Practical Guide on Reading Recipes

Read each recipe from start to finish so there are no surprises—like discovering an overnight marinade when you’re already hungry.

Pay attention to measurements: ‘1 cup chopped onion’ means chop then measure; ‘1 onion, chopped’ means chop the whole onion.

1 cup chopped onion: Chop onions, then measure one cup.

1 onion, chopped: Chop a whole onion; this gives you flexibility based on the onion’s size.

Don’t worry if you’re missing an ingredient—substitute with the closest alternative. I include suggestions in the cook’s notes when possible.

Ingredients are listed in the order you’ll use them for easy reference.

Longer recipes cover step-by-step details and sensory tips—feel, see, listen, smell, and taste as you cook. Adjust to your liking!

Practical Advice on Cooking

Make each recipe your own. Taste and adjust as you go—my recipes are a starting point for your unique version.

Every kitchen is different, so outcomes will vary. That’s why I include visual and sensory cues to guide you.

Trust your senses—the more you cook, the more confident you’ll become.

NOTEBOOK

The Notebook section is for food stories, ingredient spotlights, and personal cooking experiences—longer reads, separate from the recipes.

Living away from the Philippines sparked my curiosity about its history, regional dishes, and global connections.  This section lets me explore and share those discoveries.
